SHARING MUSICAL STORIES FOR OVER 15 SEASONS
For our 19th season, we are excited to announce that we’ll be producing, live and in-person, HADESTOWN Teen Edition this coming December (2025) and INTO THE WOODS in May (2026).
Journey to the underworld with us as we embark on Hadestown. This intriguing, beautiful and yet haunting, jazz inflected folk opera delivers a a deeply resonant and defiantly hopeful theatrical experience. Following two intertwining love stories that of the young dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of the immortal King Hades and lady Persephone. Come follow Orpheus' mythical quest to overcome Hades and regain the favor of his one true love, Eurydice. HADESTOWN invites audiences on a hell-raising journey to the underworld and back.
In Spring 2026, Mainstage Theatre Company will embark on a journey Into the Woods. The beloved classic by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine has captivated audiences for generations, and now, Toronto’s young performers will have the opportunity to bring these iconic roles to life. All your favourite fairy tale characters—Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Jack (of beanstalk fame), Rapunzel, and more—are here, their stories woven together to create a rich, thought-provoking, and entertaining musical experience.
Into the Woods explores what happens after “happily ever after,” the unforeseen consequences of getting what you wish for, and the deeper truth that every action carries weight. The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish for a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King’s Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife discover they are cursed by a Witch, they set out on a quest to break the spell. Though everyone’s wishes are eventually granted, the repercussions of their choices return to haunt them—with unexpected and devastating consequences.
Into the Woods remains as timeless and relevant as ever. Auditions will take place in January 2026, and the production will run in May 2026 at the Alumnae Theatre.
